Williams and listeners to make attempt Sunday at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien
WGN Radio midday host John Williams and a group of his listeners will attempt to break the world record for the fastest round of golf this Sunday, Sept. 16 from 8-10 a.m. at Carriage Greens Country Club in Darien. Dubbed “King John & His Royal Court’s Speed Golf World Record Challenge,” this will be the 2nd attempt at a world record by Williams and crew after last year’s inaugural event.
Williams has assembled a team of 200 listeners for this Sunday’s event, which will play out in a speed golf relay format. Golfers will be assigned locations along the course based upon their best club and will hit the ball to each other in progression. The current world record is 7 minutes, 56 seconds.
“Last year we narrowly missed the record by a mere 19 minutes, and the injury count was surprisingly low. So…” joked Williams.
Registration for participants is now closed, but spectators are welcome. Both participants and spectators will also be able to register to win two round-trip tickets to any Southwest-operated scheduled destination and two entrance tickets for two days to the Majors tournament at Medinah, generously provided by event sponsor Southwest Airlines.
Photos and video of the event will be available on wgnradio.com this Monday. For video and photos of the 2011 event, please click here.
