Litton and Tribune Team Up to Give Viewers “Direct Access” Weekly Urban Entertainment Series to Debut Fall 2011
PIX11 and Tribune Stations Set to Debut the Weekly Urban Entertainment Series Fall 2011
This Fall, Litton Entertainment and Tribune Broadcasting are partnering in the national launch of DIRECT ACCESS, a half-hour weekly hip-hop, urban entertainment extravaganza hosted by popular television and radio personality Darian “Big Tigger” Morgan. DIRECT ACCESS has already been successfully road tested on Washington, DC’s WDCW, where the show has rated Number 1 with Men 25-54 and 18-34 in its 11:30p.m. Saturday time period.
WPIX General Manager Eric Meyrowitz (formerly GM at WDCW) launched the show in April 2010 when he noticed that other entertainment series left certain audiences on the table. “In the broadcast landscape there is no show centered around hip-hop,” he said. “Judging by the large audience for hip-hop shows and Tigger’s popularity on the radio we knew there was an audience. And we want to serve that audience.”
“We are excited to join Litton and Tribune in granting Chicagoans ‘direct access’ to Big Tigg’s weekly show,” said Neal Sabin, President and General Manager, WCIU. “We think it will resonate with the Windy City’s hip-hop culture.”
“We were very impressed with the show and by the ratings DIRECT ACCESS was pulling in D.C., and, like Eric, we are keenly aware of the lack of programming for the urban audience on broadcast television,” said Tom Warner, Litton’s Executive Vice President, Domestic Distribution.
DIRECT ACCESS capitalizes on Tigger’s popularity and celebrity connections to give viewers a VIP pass with exclusive access to their favorite celebrities in the worlds of music, sports, entertainment and nightlife. “I let the viewer hang out with me in all kinds of places,” he says. “You’re allowed to go with me to parties and backstage — places you might not normally be able to.”
Despite the urban entertainment focus of the show, Big Tigger likes to say that the show is aimed at “anyone with a TV.” The series also features the hottest music videos and entertainment news from Vogue’s Hot 100 Model Katie Rost.
DIRECT ACCESS will be airing on Tribune’s PIX11 (New York), WDCW (Washington, DC), and KDAF (Dallas-Ft. Worth), among others, as well as Weigel’s WCIU in Chicago beginning Fall 2011 on weekends.
