WGN-TV Announces 2008 Cubs Broadcast Schedule –WGN Celebrates 60th Anniversary as the Home of Cubs Telecasts With Two Hour Special to Air in April
CHICAGO, February 6, 2008 –WGN-TV celebrates its 60th anniversary as the home of Chicago Cubs baseball with the announcement of its 2008 broadcast schedule that includes 70 games to air on WGN-TV and eight games to air on WCIU-TV. Beginning this year, all regular season Chicago Cubs games, both home and away, on WGN-DT and WCIU-DT will be broadcast in HDTV. A complete WGN-TV/WCIU Cubs broadcast schedule is attached. Len Kasper and Bob Brenly will return to the Cubs broadcast booth for the 2008 season as the voices of the Cubs broadcasts on WGN-TV and WCIU. The WGN Sports Emmy Award-winning production team will produce all games.
The Cubs off-season moves this year include the acquisition of a perennial all-star from Japan. Kosuke Fukudome is a strong doubles-hitting right-fielder and projected to make a major impact at the Major League level. All-Stars Derrek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Zambrano return as the Cubs attempt to build on last year’s National League Central title.
Hot game match-ups on WGN this year include the Cubs’ first game of the season at home on 3/31 against their division rivals, the Milwaukee Brewers. Last season, the Cubs edged out the Brewers for the NL Central Division Title. This is the first of nine regular season games against slugger Prince Fielder and the up-and-coming Milwaukee Brewers.
A Chicago cross-town clash is on deck at Wrigley Field when the Northsiders swing against Ozzie Guillen and the Chicago White Sox on 6/21 and 6/29.
In other rivalries, the Cubs face MVP runner-up Matt Holliday and the NL Champion Colorado Rockies twice on WGN (4/24 and 6/1). The Cubs and Cardinals square off five 5 times (5/2, 7/4, 9/9, 9/20, 9/21) including a July 4th match-up guaranteed to produce some fireworks. The Cubs will seek revenge against the 2007 NL West Champion Arizona Diamondbacks on 5/9, 5/11 and 7/22, and they’ll play against NL MVP Jimmy Rollins and the 2007 NL East Champion Philadelphia Phillies on 4/12, 8/28 and 8/31.
WGN will also televise a special in-season exhibition game on June 16, when the Cubs head to the home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame to participate in the final Hall of Fame Game in Cooperstown, NY against San Diego.
WGN-TV will air “Cubs Forever: Celebrating 60 Years of WGN-TV and the Cubs” in high definition on April 20 at 6pm. The two-hour special will explore the romance between the Cubs, WGN-TV and the fans, by reliving some of the greatest moments and highlights in Cubs history. A who’s who of Cubs players and fans will share their memories of the past 60 years including Ernie Banks, Billy Williams, Ron Santo, Ryne Sandberg, Mark Grace, Greg Maddux, Andre Dawson, Rick Sutcliffe, Kerry Wood, Jimmy Buffett and Bonnie Hunt. Encore presentations of the special (subject to change) are scheduled to run May 3 at 7pm, June 21 at 10pm, July 5 at 7pm and August 16 at 4pm.
